Bank exam English: reading speed decides the score

Every major bank exam gives English 30 questions and 20 minutes in prelims — and almost half of those questions sit on a passage. Bank English is SSC English with more reading and less memorisation.

The formats banks ask

  • Reading comprehension — a 500–700 word passage on the economy, banking, technology or society, with 7–10 questions.
  • Cloze test — five to seven blanks in a short passage.
  • Error detection and sentence improvement — the same grammar rules as SSC.
  • Para jumbles — arrange five or six sentences into a paragraph.
  • Word swap, word usage, connectors and column-based sentence formation — newer formats that test meaning and grammar together.

How to prepare for bank English

  1. Read one long article daily — an economy or editorial piece — and summarise it in two lines. This is the single habit that moves bank English scores.
  2. Learn grammar by rule, then practise error detection in sets of 10. The rules are the same as SSC.
  3. Practise para jumbles with a method: find the opening sentence (no pronoun or connector pointing back), then link pairs.
  4. Take sectional mocks on the 20-minute clock from week three, and analyse which format took the most time.
  5. For PO mains, write one letter or essay a week and get it checked for structure, grammar and length.

Bank exams English — questions students ask

How many English questions are in bank prelims?

IBPS PO, SBI PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk and RBI Assistant prelims each have 30 English questions for 30 marks, with a 20-minute sectional timer and 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer.

Which English topic is most important for bank exams?

Reading comprehension. A single passage usually carries 7 to 10 of the 30 prelims questions, and most other formats — cloze, para jumbles — also reward reading speed.

Is there English in IBPS RRB exams?

IBPS RRB (Regional Rural Banks) PO and Clerk prelims test reasoning and numerical ability only. English appears in the mains as a choice of English or Hindi language.

Can I prepare for SSC and bank exams together?

Yes. The grammar is identical. Add daily long-passage reading and para jumbles for banks, and daily vocabulary revision for SSC.
