Tier 1 — English Language2550−0.5
Tier 2 — English Language & Comprehension40120−1

Tier 1 is a 100-question, 200-mark paper across four subjects in 60 minutes. Tier 2 Section I pairs English with General Awareness, and also carries a computer knowledge module and a typing or skill test, which are qualifying.

What CHSL asks most

  • Error spotting and sentence improvement — subject-verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions and pronoun errors.
  • Fill in the blanks — mostly vocabulary in context (choosing between near-synonyms) and prepositions.
  • Synonyms and antonyms — frequently repeated words; many come straight from earlier CHSL and CGL papers.
  • Idioms, one-word substitution and spellings — short, fast questions that should take under 20 seconds each.
  • Cloze test and comprehension — one cloze of five blanks or a short passage in Tier 1; more in Tier 2.

Tips that save marks in CHSL

  • Attempt vocabulary and spelling questions first — they are the fastest marks on the paper.
  • In Tier 2, each wrong answer costs a full mark. Skip a question you cannot narrow to two options.
  • For sentence improvement, check the underlined part against the rest of the sentence: tense consistency and agreement errors hide in the part that is not underlined.
  • Keep one notebook — or one app list — of your wrong answers, and revise from it every Sunday.
