Railway exams and English: what is actually tested

The short answer most guides avoid: RRB NTPC and RRB Group D computer-based tests have no separate English section. Here is what that means for your preparation — and why most railway aspirants still need English.

In short

  • RRB NTPC CBT 1 tests General Awareness (40), Mathematics (30) and Reasoning (30) — no English section.
  • RRB Group D tests Maths, Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness — no English section.
  • English is a language of the question paper, alongside Hindi and regional languages — reading questions quickly in English still saves time.
  • Most railway aspirants also sit SSC CGL, CHSL or MTS, where English is worth 50–135 marks. Preparing English is how a railway aspirant widens their options.

Does RRB NTPC have English?

No. The NTPC CBT 1 is 100 questions — 40 General Awareness, 30 Mathematics and 30 General Intelligence and Reasoning — with one-third of a mark deducted for a wrong answer. CBT 2 uses the same three subjects. There is no English section in either.

Where English still matters for railway aspirants

  • Reading the paper. If you take the paper in English, faster reading means more time for maths. Many students switch between English and Hindi versions of a question to check its meaning.
  • SSC exams in the same year. NTPC aspirants commonly sit SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS, where English is a full scoring section.
  • Typing and skill tests for some NTPC posts are taken in English or Hindi.
  • Interviews and documentation later in service.

A plan if you are preparing for railway and SSC together

  1. Keep maths and reasoning as your main block — they are shared by both.
  2. Add 30 minutes of English a day: 10 minutes of vocabulary revision and 20 minutes of grammar rules with practice questions.
  3. From two months before an SSC exam, add timed English sections in that exam's pattern.

Railway exams English — questions students ask

Is English asked in RRB NTPC?

No. RRB NTPC CBT 1 and CBT 2 test General Awareness, Mathematics, and General Intelligence and Reasoning only. English is one of the languages the paper can be taken in, not a subject.

Is there English in RRB Group D?

No. RRB Group D tests Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness and Current Affairs.

Which railway-related exam has English?

IBPS RRB PO and Clerk — exams for Regional Rural Banks, not Indian Railways — include an English or Hindi language section in the mains. Among railway aspirants, English matters most for the SSC exams many of them also take.
